Work at FGCU

Your first day is just the beginning to a wonderful experience in the FGCU community, built of talented staff, personnel, adjuncts and faculty-in-residence, students, and leaders! Not only will you receive the space to bloom into a new career position, but you might also surprise yourself on how you impact those around you. You will meet first thing at Human Resources for the New Employee Orientation to begin your employment and become familiar with some procedures and essential information for taking advantage of employee benefits. 

• A temporary parking permit will be provided for the arrival on the first day. You will be required to purchase the appropriate parking pass from parking services within the start of your employment.
• NEO is designed to give you the necessary tools and resources for your career journey at FGCU. The purpose of our NEO is to help you understand FGCU’s culture, vision, mission, and core values, as well as providing valuable information to ensure successful employment at the university.
• FGCU utilizes electronic new hire paperwork forms to complete the hiring process. External applicants who are selected as finalists will be asked to complete the appropriate electronic new hire paperwork forms.  Human Resources will email the electronic new hire paperwork to the new employee at the email listed in their application.  The electronic new hire paperwork should be completed prior to the start date to expedite the hire process.

In addition, new employees will be required to print (single-sided) and complete the three (3) forms in the New Employee Orientation Packet (I-9, Loyalty Oath, FRS Certification).

Pursuant to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service, all new employees are required to complete and submit the Employment Eligibility Verification (Form I-9) and provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States of America.  New employees will need to bring the New Employee Orientation Packet, and their forms of identification for the I-9 Form.

 Faculty New Employee Orientation

Each year before the fall semester starts the Lucas Center for Faculty Development hosts New Faculty Orientation which includes a presentation from the Benefits team.  The Lucas Center will contact each new Faculty member to confirm the date of orientation.  In addition, each new Faculty member will be contacted by Human Resources to schedule a sign on session.  Please contact Human Resources at (239) 590-1400 with questions regarding Faculty sign on.

Sign Up & Attend a New Employee Orientation session for OPS/ Students / Adjuncts:  

NEO SIGN UP

• The student or OPS employee will need to bring their completed paperwork, support documentation required, to their scheduled NEO appointment.  Please do NOT send anyone without an appointment!
• Any student or OPS worker without an appointment will be directed to schedule an appointment for a future date with open seats
• Once the NEO session is completed, the HR Records team will provide the employee a form to take back to the hiring manager, indicating their clearance to work, or whether information is required
• Reminder: In order for FGCU to be in compliance with federal and state laws, if the employee has not completed the paperwork that is part of the NEO session and the fingerprinting/background check, the student or OPS worker has not been cleared and cannot start work

• Request for Personal Exemption from the Public Record. If you qualify under one or more of the the General Exemption criteria, you are exempt from the public record, pursant of Florida Law (F.S. 119.071). 

Per Florida Statute 295.07-Preference in appointment and retention:

1. The state and its political subdivisions shall give preference in appointment and retention in positions of employment to:
   1. Those disabled veterans:
      1. Who have served on active duty in any branch of the United States Armed Forces, have received an honorable discharge, and have established the present existence of a service-connected disability that is compensable under public laws administered by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs; or
      2. Who are receiving compensation, disability retirement benefits, or pension by reason of public laws administered by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs and the United States Department of Defense.
   2. The spouse of a person who has a total disability, permanent in nature, resulting from a service-connected disability and who, because of this disability, cannot qualify for employment, and the spouse of a person missing in action, captured in line of duty by a hostile force, or forcibly detained or interned in line of duty by a foreign government or power.
   3. A wartime veteran as defined in s. 1.01(14), who has served at least 1 day during a wartime period. Active duty for training may not be allowed for eligibility under this paragraph.
   4. The unremarried widow or widower of a veteran who died of a service-connected disability.
   5. The mother, father, legal guardian, or unremarried widow or widower of a member of the United States Armed Forces who died in the line of duty under combat-related conditions, as verified by the United States Department of Defense.
   6. A veteran as defined in s. 1.01(14). Active duty for training may not be allowed for eligibility under this paragraph.
   7. A current member of any reserve component of the United States Armed Forces or the Florida National Guard.

To claim veterans' preference, an applicant must:

• Indicate your claim for Veterans' Preference on the employment application
• Upload DD214 to each posting covered under F.S. 295, as described above. A new DD214 must be uploaded with each application submitted. Forms submitted under a previous application will not transfer to another position application. Note: Certain categories of preference may require additional documentation to be submitted by the claimant. Human Resources will contact the applicant should additional documentation beyond the DD214 be required.
Note: Current reserve members and National Guard members must upload a letter with their online application from their Commanding Officer stating the dates of their military service to establish that they are currently active.

The following changes were made to the Florida veterans' preference law effective July 1, 2014:

• The Florida residency requirement was removed.
• The requirement to serve during a wartime period was removed.
• The following categories for preference were added:
  • The mother, father, legal guardian, or unremarried widow or widower of a member of the United States Armed Forces who died in the line of duty under combat-related conditions, as verified by the United States Department of Defense;
  • A veteran as defined in s. 1.01(14). Active duty for training may not be allowed for eligibility under this paragraph; and
  • A current member of any reserve component of the United States Armed Forces or the Florida National Guard.
