MOU – Electronic Submission of Sabbatical and Professional Development Leave Applications
The MOU passed by Faculty Senate on 8.25.23 was signed by Provost Rieger and is currently in place for AY 2023-2024. The MOU will be posted to the Faculty Senate resources page as well as the Interfolio Resources site on the Provost’s website.
Board of Governors
The BOG meeting originally scheduled for August 29-30, 2023, was canceled due to hurricane Idalia. The meeting has been moved to a virtual meeting scheduled for today, September 8, 2023, from 2:00-3:30pm. There is a packed agenda that includes reports from the UNF and FAU Presidential searches, review of Linking Industry to Nursing Education (LINE) 2023-24 Proposals, and review of the 2024-2025 State University System Legislative Budget Request. Refer to my 8.25.23 report for additional details of our LINE proposals and Legislative Budget Request. The full agenda can be found on the BOG website and the meeting is viewable on the Florida Channel.
Board of Trustees
The next BOT meeting is scheduled for September 12th, 2023, at 8:30am in the Cohen Ballroom. The agenda is lengthy, and I encourage you to review. The agenda is available on the BOT website. Of particular note on the agenda is the addition of Amendment of Article 23 of the CBA with UFF (Tab A), pending ratification by faculty Monday, September 11th, 2023. Former Trustee and Past Faculty Senate President Anna Carlin will also be recognized for her services at this meeting, so it would be wonderful to see as many Senators there as possible in support.
Civility Summit
The Civility Summit that took place Sept 6th, 2023, was well attended. The event consisted of: a panel of representatives from Student Government (Emory Cavin), Faculty Senate (Lyndsay Rhodes), Staff Advisory Council (Jena Padilla), the Board of Trustees (Blake Gable), and Academic Affairs (Mark Rieger); roundtable exercises to explore the meaning of civility at FGCU; and closed with a brief panel providing resources from the University Ombuds (Daniel Hoover), Faculty Affairs (Tony Barringer), Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance (Precious Gunter), Campus Life/Dean of Students (Chris Blakely), and Human Resources (Jana Sabo). There were some good conversations started and I look forward to hearing more from the campus about their perspectives on the event.
The next event from the Office of Public Policy Events will take place on October 9, 2023, featuring Marc Lamont Hill and Robert George debating Affirmative Action and the Cost of Higher Education. Be on the lookout for additional information.
Fall Commencement
Fall Commencement is scheduled for Saturday, December 16, 2023. Two ceremonies are anticipated, but there is the potential to add an additional ceremony on Sunday, December 17, 2023, if needed. Faculty are encouraged to participate as part of the processional. This is a wonderful way to send off our graduates and show our support. Additional information and requests for volunteers will come from each academic unit. I hope to see you all there.
Guidance for Funding
The Office for Research and Sponsored Programs, Continuing Education, and the University Foundation have provided a document providing guidance for sponsored projects, gifts and continuing Education activities. Faculty may find this information useful in identifying the proper paths for funds provided through various channels. The new document is currently posted on the Provost’s website.
