Dear Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) Students, Faculty, Staff and Community Members,

It is with deep appreciation and respect that I acknowledge the remarkable tenure and accomplishments of our outgoing Police Chief, James Slapp. During Chief Slapp’s tenure, the University Police Department (UPD) has not only focused on maintaining public safety but has also fostered stronger bonds with our community.

Please join me in expressing our heartfelt appreciation for his exceptional service and wishing him continued success in all his future pursuits. Thank you, Chief Slapp, for your unwavering commitment to our department and community. Your influence will resonate within our agency for years to come.

My commitment to student success and academic excellence is paramount.  With more than three decades of law enforcement experience, and many of those years being in an educational setting, I am confident my experiences will add value to an already exceptional department.

UPD provides a variety of crime prevention programs, assists in coordinating special events, and always provides reliable high quality professional service.

We strive to surpass your highest expectations, but your partnership and participation is needed. This is also your home so please assist us in making it as safe and friendly as possible by doing the following:

• Locking your doors
• Removing valuables from your vehicle
• Obeying traffic laws
• Utilizing the shuttle service or requesting our after-hours escort service if traveling alone
• Driving cautiously and defensively
• Acting responsibly and being respectful to others
• Being aware of your surroundings – situational awareness
