FGCU School of Nursing receives $678,109.00 HRSA grant for the Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP).
FGCU School of Nursing receives $678,109.00 HRSA (Health Resources and Service Administration) Grant for the Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP). The program provides partial loan forgiveness to graduates of advanced education nursing degree programs who serve as full-time faculty upon graduation for a consecutive four-year period.
The purpose of the NFLP is to increase the number of qualified nursing faculty nationwide. The NFLP provides partial loan forgiveness to students enrolled in advanced education nursing degree programs who are committed to become nurse faculty. In exchange for full-time post-graduation employment as nurse faculty, the program authorizes cancelation of up to 85% of any such loan (plus interest thereon). The NFLP will benefit qualified registered nurse applicants enrolled in the following FGCU School of Nursing Programs:
- Doctorate of Nursing Practice Family Nurse Practitioner (DNP-FNP)
- Doctorate of Nursing Practice Nurse Anesthesiology (DNP-NA)
- MSN Nurse Educator Program
- MSN Nurse Anesthetist Program
To be eligible to receive an NFLP loan, students must be enrolled in one of the School of Nursing Programs listed above and:
- Be in good academic standing
- Be a citizen of the United States, a non-citizen national, or a foreign national having in their possession a visa permitting permanent residence in the United States and its territories
- Have no judgment liens entered against them based on the default on a federal debt according to federal law 28 U.S.C. 3201(e)
- Be willing to pursue a program of study that will prepare them to become nursing faculty or a clinical preceptor within an academic-practice partnership upon graduation.
- Be willing to commit to a full-time teaching position with an accredited school of nursing upon graduation or full-time clinical preceptor within an academic-practice partnership upon graduation

BSN to DNP Family Nurse Practitioner Program Receives $2.7M Federal ANEW Grant
FCCU School of Nursing, BSN to DNP Family Nurse Practitioner Program has received a $2.7 million grant over four years, to increase the number of nurse practitioners students educated to provide high-quality primary care to rural and underserved populations. Family Nurse Practitioner (F.N.P.) students will receive specialized education through an innovative academic-practice partnership between FGCU and Healthcare Network of Southwest Florida.
The project, 2019 FGCU Advanced Nursing Education Workforce (ANEW) Program* is funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The focus is on improving the health outcomes of rural and underserved communities, and to develop innovative goals and objectives to address value-based care delivery, chronic disease prevention, and management in community based practice settings.
Students selected to participate in the FGCU ANEW Program based on eligibility criteria will receive traineeship awards to assist with tuition, books, and housing expenses. Selected students will receive awards up to $22,000 for full-time study and $11,000 for part-time study. Eligibility criteria include meeting the FGCU BSN to DNP Family Nurse Practitioner Program admissions criteria, a statement of need, and a desire to work in a rural or medically underserved area upon graduation.
Thirteen students will participate in the project in the 2019-2020 academic year. FGCU FACULTY RECEIVES $21,678.00 HRSA AWARD, NURSE ANESTHETIST TRAINEESHIP GRANT
The purpose of the Florida Gulf Coast University Nurse Anesthetist Traineeship (FGCU NAT) Program is to improve the national workforce distribution of nurse anesthesia practitioners in underserved and rural areas, increase the number of diverse and culturally competent nurse anesthesia practitioners in the workforce, and transform health care delivery by increasing the number of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) who are well-qualified to practice independently within collaborative, inter-professional teams to deliver the full continuum of anesthesia and pain management services in a manner that is responsive to HRSA’s priority of combatting the opioid crisis / improving mental health.
The primary objectives of the FGCU NAT Program are to: 1) prepare registered nurses (RNs) to become CRNAs who are well qualified to practice independently within collaborative, inter-professional teams to deliver evidence-based, high-quality, and safe anesthesia and pain management services in a manner that is responsive to combatting the opioid crisis; 2) increase diversity within the nurse anesthesia profession by attracting, retaining, and graduating students from underrepresented minority (UM) and disadvantaged backgrounds 3) prepare RNs to become CRNAs who deliver anesthesia and pain management services to rural populations and medically underserved communities, 4) demonstrate that at least 60% of FGCU Nurse Anesthesiology (FGCU NA) Program graduates will be employed in clinical practice settings that are in health professional shortage areas (HPSAs) and/or serve rural populations and MUCs.
Receiving the HRSA Traineeship Grant is a long-term attainment for the Florida Gulf
Coast University Nurse Anesthetist Traineeship (FGCU NAT). Providing traineeships
to nurse anesthesia students will cover costs associated with nurse anesthesia education.
The HRSA grant award will increase the probability that nurse anesthesia students
will be retained in and graduate from the Florida Gulf Coast University Nurse Anesthesiology
Program (FGCU NA Program).
