CLS Certificate Resources

For Spring admission, all application materials must be received by October 15.

The post-baccalaureate certificate program in Clinical Laboratory Science is designed for students with baccalaureate degrees in the chemical or biological sciences who seek licensure/certification in clinical laboratory science. Individuals completing the program are prepared to work in the clinical laboratory areas of chemistry, microbiology, immunohematology, hematology, and immunology. Clinical experiences at community laboratories are integrated within the curriculum and enhance your growth as professionals.

Admission Requirements

  1. Submission of a FGCU Post-Baccalaureate Non-Degree Certificate Application to the Office of Graduate Admissions prior to the established deadline.
  2. Submission of a completed supplemental application for the Clinical Laboratory Science Certificate program to the Department of Health Sciences prior to the established deadline.
  3. Baccalaureate degree or higher from an institution that maintains accreditation by a U.S. Department of Education sanctioned accrediting body (https://www2.ed.gov/admins/finaid/accred/index.html) or equivalent foreign institution, as documented by official transcripts. All specific prerequisite courses for the major must have been completed within the past seven years.
  4. A cumulative grade point average of 3.20 for the prerequisite course work.
  5. International graduate applicants are required to submit a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper based-test) or 213 (computer-based test) or 79 (internet-based test) or a minimum IELTS score of 6.5.
  6. Complete the following prerequisite courses or the equivalent with a grade of C or above:
    1. Biology 16 credits (with Microbiology and Anatomy/Physiology)
    2. Chemistry 16 credits (with Organic or Biochemistry)
    3. Mathematics 3 credits
  7. The following prerequisite courses or the equivalent are recommended:
    1. Genetics
    2. Immunology

Additional Graduation Requirements

  • Students must satisfactorily complete the 39 credits specified by the certificate program. 
  • A grade of C or higher must be earned in all Clinical Lab Science certificate courses.
