2024 FGCU Day at the Capitol- January 22-23, 2024
FGCU celebrated the 10th Annual FGCU Day at the Capitol on Tuesday, January 23, 2024. A group of energetic students led by President Timur soared into Tallahassee to interact with elected officials and learn the fundamentals of state government. During the day, the students met with elected officials and discussed the importance and impact of FGCU's legislative priorities.
They also participated in activities such as an advocacy panel, a tour of both the Senate and House of Representatives Chambers, as well as, engage with FGCU Alumni residing in Tallahassee.
Chancellor Ray Rodrigues, a proud FGCU alum, was excited to great students and participate in FGCU Day at the Capitol.
2023-2025 Chairman of the Board of Directors- FGCU Alumni Association
Ryan King is an accomplished customer service professional who has worked to improve the consumer experience with companies such as Hertz, FPL and most recently, the Lenovo Corporation where he serves as a Manager of Operations. He is a two-time graduate of Florida Gulf Coast University. Since graduation, Mr. King has remained connected with University serving as a recruiter, created internship opportunities, and has been a member of the Marketing Board Advisory Committee for the Lutgert College of Business.
Ryan is passionate about engaging alumni, helping students become successful, and working with the University to make an impact in the local community. He was born and raised in Fort Myers, Florida and feels very blessed that he has been able to be part of what FGCU has become in Southwest Florida.
Why is advocacy important?
Advocacy for FGCU is important because of the impact the school makes on the lives of their students and alumni. Being an Eagle is not something that only lasts 4 years, it lasts a lifetime. I have been involved with FGCU since 2002, I have participated in various programs, events and associations within the school...without advocacy, none of this would be possible.
2023-2024 FGCU Student Government President
Emory Cavin was elected FGCU's 26th Student Body President on April 1, 2023, and will serve a one- year term ending on May 30, 2024. During his term, he will also serve as a member of the FGCU Board of Trustees.
President Cavin is a junior pursuing a communications degree. During his time at FGCU, he has been a Resident Assistant, Residence Life Team Assistant, Honors House Leader, and the Student Government Supervisor of Elections.

2023 Eagle Advocacy Legislative Appreciation Reception
Former President Martin and President Timur hosted the 2023 Eagle Advocacy Legislative Appreciation Reception on June 8, 2023 to thank the members of the Southwest Florida Legislative Delegation for their continued advocacy and support during the 2023 Legislative Session. To acknowledge the partnership between the FGCU Alumni Association and Eagle Advocacy, Michael Nachef, Chair of the Alumni Board of Directors, thanked the numerous alumni in attendance for their active participation in Eagle Advocacy. Because Michael's term as Chair was ending on July 1, he was presented with an award for all his continues dedication and support of Eagle Advocacy. The reception was Former President Martin's last Eagle Advocacy event as President of FGCU. He was presented with a collage of group photos from FGCU Day at the Capitol and the FGCU Legislative Internship Program.
9th Annual FGCU Day at the Capitol
On Tuesday, March 28, 2023,, a group of energetic student Eagle Advocates led by Former President Mike Martin soared into Tallahassee to proudly represent our outstanding institution.
Throughout the day, advocates met with elected officials including the Southwest Florida Legislative Delegation to discuss the importance and impact of FGCU's Legislative Priorities. They also participated in other activities such as an Advocacy panel, an Alumni-led career mentoring session, a House of Representatives Chamber Tour sponsored by Representative Spencer Roach, a Senate Chamber photo opportunity with both Senate President Kathleen Passidomo and Senator Jonathan Martin and meetings with members of the Southwest Florida Legislative Delegation.
2023 FGCU Legislative Internship Program
With the continued support of Former President Martin, the Southwest Florida Legislative Delegation, and FGCU"s Student Government, six interns have been selected for the FGCU Legislative Internship Program for the Spring 2023 Semester.
Acceptance to our program is very competitive and these student demonstrate the core values necessary for student success and exemplify the FGCU Effect. They are excited to continue the proud tradition set forth by their predecessors as they represent Florida Gulf Coast University.
Each intern will travel to Tallahassee for the 2023 Legislative Session and we look forward to these students experiencing first-hand the state legislative process.

Student Leaders Advocate in Tallahassee- January 2023
The Florida Student Association (FSA) leaders, including five representing FGCU, traveled to Tallahassee to advocate for their top legislative priorities: Food Insecurity and Tele-Mental Health Services funding. It is their goal to eliminate student food insecurity on university campuses throughout the state of Florida and provide necessary mental health access. During their time at the Capitol, student leaders met with Senate President Kathleen Passidomo to discuss these priorities.

Former President Martin hosted the 2022 Eagle Advocacy Legislative Appreciation Reception on April 28, 2022, to thank the members of the Southwest Florida Legislative Delegation for their continued advocacy and support during the 2022 Legislative Session.
The Office of Government Relations Legislative Interns: Matthew Boggan, Chadrick Fleno, Andres Palacio, Stephanie Porvaznik, and Sophia Verdino were recognized and presented with their official FGCU Legislative Scholar lapel pins.

Student Government Elects New President for 2022-2023
Grace Brannigan was elected FGCU's 25th Student Body President on April 1, 2022, and will serve a one-year term ending on March 30, 2023. During this term, she will also serve as a member of the FGCU Board of Trustees.
President Brannigan is a senior with a double major in History and Political Science with a minor in Philosophy. She is a proud First- Generation college student who has served in a broad range of leadership roles across campus since her freshman year. Grace served as a Senator for the College of Arts and Sciences and Senate President and also served as Vice President and President of the Resident Housing Association.
President Brannigan is a proud member of the Eagle Chapter of the National Residence Hall Honorary and FGCU's Honors College.
She plans to continue her education at law school after graduating in May 2023.
2022 FGCU Day at the Capitol
FGCU Day was held on January, 25, 2022. This student led initiative was packed with events that included an alumni dinner, an advocacy panel, Senate and House of Representatives Chamber tours, a photo opportunity with Governor DeSantis and meetings with members of the Legislature. The day ended with an introduction of the student delegation by Representative Kaylee Tuck, a member of the Southwest Florida Delegation, in the House of Representatives Higher Education Appropriations Committee. The event was a success with students presenting a powerful message that promoted FGCU's 2022 Legislative Priorities and their personal educational experiences.

Eagle Advocacy Legislative Kickoff
Former President Martin hosted the Eagle Advocacy Legislative Kickoff on Thursday, September 30 to present an overview of FGCU's Legislative Agenda and advocacy efforts. FGCU Provost Mark Rieger, Student Government President Alyssa Fleischer and Chair of the Alumni Association Board of Directors Michael Nachef spoke about the importance and positive impact the legislative agenda would have upon FGCU.
Student Government Elects New President for 2021-2022
Alyssa Fleischer began her term as FGCU's 24th Student Government President on April 1, 2021, and will serve a one-year term ending on March 31, 2022. During this term, she will also serve as a member of the FGCU Board of Trustees.
President Fleischer is a senior majoring in Legal Studies with a double minor in both Political Science and Peace & Social Justice. After graduating in the Spring of 2022, she plans to continue to pursue these degrees in law school.
She has served in multiple capacities within the FGCU Student Government, been a Frosh Mosh Peer Mentor for the Multicultural Leadership Development Center and is returning for her fourth season as an FGCU Cheerleader.
"I am so thankful for the opportunities I have been given and my passions include serving and helping students find their homes on campus as I've found mine. Attending FGCU as a First-Generation college student has pushed me to become the leader I am today and I'm looking forward to my last year here."

Former President Martin hosted the 2021 Eagle Advocacy Legislative Appreciation Reception on June 10 to thank the members of the Southwest Florida Legislative Delegation for their tireless efforts and continuous support during the 2021 Legislative Session.
2021 Legislative Internship Program
The Office of Government Relations Legislative Internship Program has had another successful year despite the restrictions due to COVID-19.
While visiting Tallahassee during the week of April 13-15, the four legislative interns had the opportunity to spend time with Lt. Governor Jeanette Nunez.

Representative Borrero Visits FGCU
Representative Borrero had the opportunity to visit FGCU last Friday, January 22. This was Representative's first time on campus, so Former President Martin gave him the grand tour. After the tour, Former President Martin and Representative Borrero met with Executive Director of The Water School Greg Tolley, Vice President of Student Success and Enrollment Management Mitch Cordova, Director of Government Relations Jennifer Goen to discuss FGCU's University of Distinction: The Water School, our focus on student success, and the 2021 Legislative Agenda. Another part of the conversation with the Representative highlighted FGCU's on-going community outreach and water quality education in the surrounding communities. It was a very productive and positive meeting.

Student Governmental Relations Director, Jacob Barton, attended the Charlotte County Delegation meeting on Thursday, December 10 to support Former President Martin and present a student's view of the 2021 FGCU Legislative Budget request.
