Move-In Guide

We urge you to pack conservatively. Don’t try to bring everything you own. Remember, you have to find a place in your room for everything you bring. If you live close to FGCU or know that you will be going home in the near future, you can pick up additional items later.

Refrigerator and microwave Information:

Refrigerators and microwave ovens are permitted in the residence halls with the following conditions. Refrigerators are restricted to a maximum size of 5 cubic feet (mini-fridge) and microwave ovens are restricted to no more than 1000 watts. Students are allowed to have their own microwave and mini-fridge in their personal bedroom or they may share one in the common area with their roommate. The common areas in Biscayne, Everglades and Palmetto Halls have one designated outlet for a microwave/mini-fridge combination. The outlet is located in the entry foyer of each suite. We recommend that you speak with your roommate and purchase a microwave and minifridge combination that only requires one plug to operate both appliances. While we do not recommend or endorse one particular brand, information about microfridges .7 cu. ft., 700 watt microwave ovens that only require one outlet can be found at www.microfridge.com or www.compactappliance.com. You can also check your local Walmart, Target, Best Buy, etc.

 

*Optional for SoVi residents: A community kitchen is available for residents who choose to use it; however, items cannot be stored in the kitchen. Please plan accordingly.

 

ROOM ASSIGNMENTS

Assignments are sent to your postal mail and eagle email address in late May. Your roommates' names are included in your assignment letter along with their email addresses. You can also view this information in our online housing portal.  
Roommate requests must be submitted by both or all individuals in writing (either on the housing application, by email to Housing@fgcu.edu, or by updating your application in the online portal).  Only mutual roommate requests are considered at the time of assignment. The Office of Housing & Residence Life makes every attempt to honor roommate requests.  Please keep in mind that demand is high and we often cannot honor all requests.  Please note that rooms and roommate information may change due to cancellations.

Fees can be paid all at once or in four equal installments over the course of the semester.  Fall and spring rental fees are posted to Gulfline in July and December respectively. Rental fees are broken into 4 installments. Fall installments are due 8/9, 9/1, 10/1 and 11/1. Spring installments are due 1/1, 2/1, 3/1 and 4/1. Students have the option of paying in full or in accordance with the installment due date schedule. Please note, each late installment payment is subject to a $25.00 late fee. Furthermore, a $100.00 late fee will be assessed to all students whose rental fees are not paid in full by the final installment due date.   Financial aid and Florida Pre-Paid funds can be applied to on-campus housing.

Students can check the status of what they owe the University at any time from the financial information under Account Summary on Gulfline.  For details and instructions, visit the FGCU Office of the Bursar Web site.

STUDENTS: How to register your vehicle/renew permit: 
1.  Log into your Gulfline account 
2.  Click Student and Financial Aid 
3.  Click Parking Services 
4.  Click Request a Permit 
5.  Select Permit Type and click Continue 
Note: Decals and Permits can be obtained at the Parking Services Division office.

Decals distributed to Student Housing residents must be fully affixed from the inside, mid-way down the driver’s corner of the front windshield.  If it is NOT fully affixed to the windshield you will be cited for improper placement of the permit.  Student decal and permit costs are included in the per credit hour tuition. 

All students who live on campus are assigned a mailbox located in the Ackert Community Center building in North Lake Village, in the main lobbies of each Residence Hall in South Village and adjacent to the Community Center in West Lake Village. You will receive your mailbox key at move-in.

The University is not liable for damage to or loss of personal property as a result of fire, theft, or any other cause whatsoever, or failure or interruption of utilities. The University is insured under the State of Florida's self-insurance trust fund that only provides liability for damages or injuries caused by negligence on the part of the University or its employees while working within the scope of their employment. The trust fund will not reimburse for losses created by unforeseen accidents/injuries that may occur. Students are encouraged to secure their own health and personal property loss insurance.

The Office of Housing collects current cell phone numbers and emergency contact information for use in an unforeseen or urgent situation.

You may also wish to register your cell phone for emergency text messages from the FGCU Alert System. The system will alert you about important announcements from FGCU including school closures, weather-related updates & other pertinent information.

In addition, download the Rave Guardian App on your cell phone to connect directly to University Police Department with only a few clicks.

Follow signs to the community where you were assigned. Here are some helpful maps:

On move-in days, parking permits are not required, so your family and friends can come to carry all your heavy belongings. Please do not park on sidewalks, in the grass or in handicapped spaces. 

• North Lake Village: Follow the signs for the check-in location. Check-in will take place in at the Boardwalk (across from Eagles' Landing). If you are unable to check-in during your check-in time you will check-in at the Ackert Community Center.  You may park in any unreserved parking space. Once you have checked in and have your key, you will proceed to your assigned building to unload your belongings.  Please do not park in the roadways, grass or reserved parking spaces.
• South Village: Enter the University through the main entrance and follow the signage, you will then be directed to the South Village residential area where you are allotted 90 minutes to unload your vehicle. At the end of your designated unloading time, you will move your vehicle to Garage Two. Housing and Residence Life will provide shuttle buses between Garage Two and the South Village residential area throughout the day. Remember to bring a dolly or hand-truck to assist with an easier and faster move-in.
• West Lake Village: Follow the signs for the check-in location at the West Lake Village Community Center. Once you have checked in and have your key you will proceed to your assigned building to unload your belongings. Parking is limited, so please limit the number of vehicles you bring to move-in.

Living on campus can be one of the many highlights of your college experience. The Office of Housing and Residence Life focuses on assisting residents with a successful transition into the FGCU residential, campus and surrounding local communities. While living on-campus, you will learn to balance individual freedom with community responsibility and to respect and appreciate individual differences.

As a member of the residential community, you have a responsibility to yourself and to the rest of the community. Students living on-campus are presented with daily opportunities to make choices that impact their health and safety and the safety of those around them. It is the responsibility of all resident students to make the residence halls and campus a safe and healthy place to live. Students are encouraged to demonstrate respect for themselves and others as well as to take responsibility for their own actions. We have provided links to both the Community Guide and the Student Code of Conduct.  Please take some time to visit both pages so that you are familiar with the university’s expectations of you during your tenure at Florida Gulf Coast University.

In order to check out your room key, you will need your FGCU ID or another photo ID. You must be present this to receive your room key; a friend or family member may NOT check out a key for a resident.

On move-in day it is very helpful to bring a dolly or hand truck as it is difficult to park very close to the buildings. Additionally, we suggest you dress comfortably and bring water as it is quite hot here in August.

Should you find anything not working or in need of repair in your room/apartment upon move-in, you must complete a maintenance request at the Office of Housing and Residence Life web portal. In order to get to the portal, you must log into Gulfline. Once you are in the portal, click on Assignments and then on Maintenance Request. Please note, we are able to respond more quickly when you provide a specific location and a detailed description of the problem.

If the reception desks are closed, residents should contact the Resident Assistant (RA) on call. RA on-call phone numbers are posted on their bulletin boards.

You are responsible for cleaning your room or apartment and taking out your own trash and recycling on a regular basis. If you share a room or apartment, you are responsible for cleaning your part, and you and your roommate(s) are jointly responsible for cleaning common areas. University custodial services are responsible for routine cleaning of public areas, such as hallways, stairwells, public bathrooms and lounges. Hallways and stairwells must be kept free of personal belongings that could impede the ability of the custodial staff to maintain these areas.

Residents who need assistance connecting to the internet should contact the Computing Services help desk at 239-590-1188.

 Cable services are included with your housing assignment. More information and the cable lineup will be available at check-in. 

Submit a laundry maintenance request using LaundryView, the online laundry maintenance request form.

• From the drop-down menu, choose the laundry room where the problem has occurred. Signs are posted in each laundry room indicating its number.
• Select the type of equipment and the problem you have encountered.
• Enter your name, phone number (optional) and e-mail address.
• Enter comments about the specific machine and problem.
• Click Submit to complete your request.

 

Meet your RA
Resident Assistants are specially selected and trained upperclassmen who live on your floor or in your building. The role of the RA is to be a community facilitator for the students living on campus at FGCU. RAs do this through answering your many questions about housing or the University, spending time getting to know you and your interests and by offering planned events and activities that are both fun and educational. The RA has information to help solve your housing problems, knows what resources are available to you, and has experience with the academic system here at FGCU. The RAs are also responsible for administering and enforcing housing and university policies. If you have any situations or questions, feel free to contact your RA.

Your RA will be around during move-in and will probably stop by to meet you. Get to know your RA so that you are familiar with the person who can help you in your transition to living on campus. You will also see your RA at your first floor or building meeting.

Meet Your Neighbors

The first week or two after move-in is the best time to meet your neighbors on your floor, in your building or in your community. You may not be coming to FGCU with a huge group of friends and you are probably looking forward to making new friends and meeting new people.

Remember that there are many other people looking to meet their neighbors, so don't be shy in introducing yourself to the people around you. It may be more comfortable to stay in your room and talk with your friends from back home on your cell phone but it is really important to get out of your room and make friends and get to know those around you.

Your RA will host a building or floor meeting soon after you arrive.  At the meeting you will cover policies and procedures and will also have the opportunity to get to know your neighbors. Make sure you attend this meeting as it is mandatory and a lot of important information will be covered. Check with your RA for the date and time.
