Issue Brief: Status of Women in Southwest Florida

On October 9th, 2023, Claudia Goldin became the first solo female to receive the Nobel Prize in economic sciences. Her work in labor economics provided groundbreaking research on women’s participation in the labor force.  The research she has completed has influenced continued research into female participation in the labor force. This paper aims to give an overview of women in the labor market in Southwest Florida. Southwest Florida is defined as two inland counties (Hendry and Glades County) and three coastal counties (Charlotte, Collier, and Lee County) on the southern gulf coast of Florida. Specifically, we focus on the female occupation and industry makeup, unemployment rate, labor force participation, and income.

704,137 residents of Southwest Florida in 2022 were female compared to the 690,967 male residents during that same year. This paper will focus on the working population between 16 and 65 years old. This represents approximately 55 percent of the female population.
