Vester Field Station Student Opportunities

Gain Hands-on Experience Conducting Research Through Internships

Students at Vester

Our internships funded through the Blair Foundation provide opportunities to students in the Marine and Ecological Sciences Department. Five positions are funded per year (June 1– May 31) to contact specific research activities at Vester. The application process opens March 13 each year, and interns are selected by May 1. The following positions are being reviewed for 2020:

Rink2Reef: This program transforms broken hockey sticks into oyster habitats. The intern is tasked with conducting research on the reef flora and fauna and developing criteria for continued monitoring of deployed Rink2Reef units. They also work with stewards to coordinate data collection and monitoring efforts. The intern also coordinates with local hockey teams for pickup of broken sticks. More background is on the program website.

Streaming-Data Web Developer - Intern will develop web pages interfaces with data-streaming environmental instrumentation (e.g. weather and water conditions), and manage the project's social media presence.

Education Outreach: Two students will assist with field trips for local high schools on Estero Bay.  They will also create environmental informational placards for local businesses and social media posts.

Oyster Monitoring: This intern will participate in monthly field work involving various monitoring techniques for oyster beds.  They will also input data for the Vester oyster monitoring program (in conjunction with the Estero Bay Aquatic Preserve).  Lastly, they will instruct/direct volunteer assistants in field activities.

Additional Responsibilities:

This is not an exhaustive list. Interns may be needed to assist with other Vester events/tasks.

Interns will also be required to submit a biweekly log of activities.
