Florida Gulf Coast University students are invited to submit works in live theatre, film, video, performance art, dance, music, visual art, or any combination of media to the 24 Hour Festival. Thing is: you can't submit the work until one hour before it's presented to the public. Oh, and you can't start on the work until 24 hours before you submit it. Why? Because only one person knows all the elements that must be present in the work and he's telling no one. This is just the thing to kick off another year of waiting till the last minute.
No Exit
October 27th-November 7th, 2010
Written by: Jean-Paul Sarte
Directed and Designed by: Barry Cavin
Show Times: Wednesday through Saturday performances at 8pm and Sunday matinees at 2pm
Jean-Paul Sarte's No Exit is one of the best-known examples of post-war existential theatre. Even though the play has been performed for more than sizty years, it continues to examnine relevant issues that impact the daily choices we make and it continues to warn us about the dire outcome of unexamined life. The play reminds us that desire is created by things we think we cannot have; rare gems, power, fame, the attention of an aloof would-be lover, and that need flows from our misperception that things matter, that the world cares for us, and that others should do as we do. We are alone in an indifferent world only to be distanced by the constructs of language and social custom. We have traded our sensuous connection with the natural world for terminal compartments populate by those things slightly beyond our reach-our tormentors. As Mephistopheles says, "Why this is Hell, nor am I out of it."
Agamemnon
November 9-13 and November 16-20, 2012
Written by Anton Chekov
Contemporary translation by Libby Appel
Directed by Barry Cavin
War, infidelity, murder, paternal filicide, lust, and insanity, are all packed into this Classical Greek tragedy that is considered to be the grandest and most theatrical of all ancient Greek plays. As a part of the only extent Greek trilogy, Aeschlus seems to be recording the tortured beginnings of justice. But what we see in Agamemnon is still the ancient resonances of original violence and primal revenge with a trail of blood that extends from long before the story begins all the way to today.

As time compresses into memory, the past divides into worlds. These worlds, however fragmented and brief, contain their own atrocities and victories; they build walls, create demons, share sorros and bathe in the light of their gods. If you focus on any one of these worlds - a tiny mote of dust in a sunbeam-you can feel the heat on your face; a ligh that illuminates and burns.
