Wild Garden: Jen Clay, Cynthia Mason, Luca Molnar, Grace Ramsey and Anastasia Samoylova artists' talk | /cas/bsma/images/wildgarden.jpg | 31 | 08 | 2023 | 5:00pm | 1 | 11 | Wasmer Art Gallery, Arts Complex, FGCU Campus |
Artists' Talk and Reception with the Artists: Thursday, August 31, 5:00-7:00pm Employing different mediums and methods, the work of five Florida artists drifts between the natural and the surreal to conjure distinctive environments, lifeforms, and habitats. The colors, textures, and narrative mysteries on display create an immersive space--wild and lush. If these works are alluring, even playful, they also hint at darker visions, grappling with questions of control, cultivation, and social responsibility. The natural world has a history much longer than human culture; in Florida, we are bearing witness to the changes we have wrought. These artists do not shy from away from troubling questions about the future even as they revel in human possibility and natural (or supernatural) wonder. Jen Clay (Miami, FL), Cynthia Mason (St. Petersburg, FL), Luca Molnar (Deland, FL), Grace Ramsey (Fort Myers, FL), and Anastasia Samoylova (Miami, FL) will be present at the opening for an artist talk event. Sponsored by Gene and Lee Seidler, The Wasmer Endowment, WGCU Public Media and the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Arts and Culture, the Florida Council on Arts and Culture, and the National Endowment for the Arts More information can be found at https://www.fgcu.edu/artgalleries/currentseason/#CurrentShow Image Credit: Luca Molnar, Baker-Miller Pink, 2022, Oil on linen, 36 x 36 in. |

Fjelstul Art Lecture Motherlands, Sunspells, and Ghost Orchids: Art Making in Precarious Landscapes Cristina Molina | /cas/bsma/images/fjelstullecture23.jpg | 26 | 10 | 2023 | 6:00 pm | 1 | 3 | U. Tobe Recital Hall, Music Building, FGCU Campus |
Cristina Molina is a visual artist who hails from the subtropics of Miami and currently lives and works in New Orleans—two environmentally precarious sites that have influenced her research on identity, loss, and disappearing landscapes. Spanning performance, video installation, photography, and textile design, Molina’s artwork is set amongst vulnerable terrains both real and imagined. Using the language of magical realism, her works reshape and centralize little-known narratives to upend dominant histories. Molina’s projects are typically collaborative and often include the participation of The Crystal Efemmes—a collective that produces immersive installations and performances with feminist agendas and mythical proposals. Recent accolades include a fellowship at the Artist in Residence in Everglades program (2019), the Joan Mitchell Center (2021), and project support from the National Association for Latino Arts and Culture, The Foundation for Contemporary Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts. In 2020 Molina was one of 61 artists selected for the national exhibition State of the Art at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. Previously, her work has been featured at the New Orleans Museum of Art, Contemporary Arts Center New Orleans, The Ogden Museum of Southern Art, The Polk Museum, New Orleans Film Festival, and Syros International Film Festival among others. Cristina Molina is an Associate Professor and Gallery Director at Southeastern Louisiana University. Image credit: Cristina Molina, Matrilineal Portrait, 2016, Archival Pigment Print |

A Tenuous Framework: Shana McCaw and Brent Budsberg opening reception and artist talk | /cas/bsma/images/inhabitants.jpg | 18 | 01 | 2024 | 6:00 pm | 1 | 11 | U. Tobe Recital Hall, Music Building and Wasmer Art Gallery, Arts Complex, FGCU Campus |
January 18, 2024 from 6:00-8:00 p.m., artist talk in U. Tobe Recital Hall followed by reception in the Arts Complex For over twenty years, Shana McCaw and Brent Budsberg have investigated perceptions of history, ancestral memory, and psychological displacement through gallery interventions, explorations of architecture, and intuitive performance. A Tenuous Framework exhibits for the first time in a gallery setting, The Inhabitants, a video installation made in collaboration with filmmaker and Florida native Tate Bunker. Improvised over a multi-year period, this hybrid project melds film with numerous artistic forms that can be experienced both independently and in relation to the film. For this exhibition, The Inhabitants will be accompanied by architectural miniatures, installations, photography, and video works that both led to and emerged out of the filmmaking process. Objects seen on the screen are simultaneously experienced firsthand in reinterpreted forms, creating uncanny associations that bring into question the relationship between reality and artifice. The Early and World Music Ensembles of Florida State University PresentGlobal Baroque: An International Musical Journey of Historic Proportions | /concerts/images/globalbaroque.jpg | 17 | 02 | 2024 | 7:30 p.m. | 1 | 9 | U. Tobe Recital Hall, Music Building, FGCU Campus |
The Baroque era spanned from approximately 1600–1750, producing some of the greatest masterpieces in the history of Western music and a style that would become foundational for centuries to come. What is less well-known here in the West is that the Baroque period also witnessed the efflorescence of innovative and robust musical genres, styles, and traditions in societies extending far beyond Europe: Indonesian gamelan, Chinese guheng playing, Brazilian samba, and the creative expressions of enslaved people of African descent, to name a few. Moreover, the persistence of European Baroque influences on diverse musics around the world in modern times has continued to resonate across the global musicultural landscape throughout the centuries, from the song and panpipe traditions of the South American Andes and vibrant steel drum traditions of Trinidad to Irish dance tunes and the sacred music of Indigenous peoples from Florida to Bolivia. This concert encompasses all these traditions and more through an exciting, eclectic musical journey that explores a pivotal historical period in the world of music-making, the Baroque, while also making the musical case for “Baroque music,” writ large, as a vital, living legacy of contemporary music the world over. Join FSU College of Music faculty, staff, graduate students, and undergraduate students for this musical performance of Global Baroque. |

Emile Naoumoff has been likened to both Vladimir Horowitz and Arthur Rubinstein as a pianist, displaying the fire of the former and the poetry of the latter. He was also signed as a composer at age 18 – the youngest on their roster – with the music publisher Schott, Mainz. At the age of seven, after a fateful meeting in Paris, Emile became the last disciple of the legendary Nadia Boulanger, who referred to him as “The gift of my old age”. Since that time, he has enjoyed a worldwide performance career. He has been professor of piano at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music since 1998. For his concert at FGCU he wil be playing works of Fauré, Ravel, Nadia Boulanger, Lili Boulanger, and his own compositions. Tickets can be purchased online at fgcu.edu/concerts and are $15 for the general public or $7 for students. |

How can I purchase tickets? Tickets are available online through our ticketing website.
Will my tickets be mailed to me? No. While you will receive a confirmation email after your purchase, tickets will not be mailed, but will be held at the Box Office and will be available one hour prior to the performance.
Are there assigned seats? All of our performances are General Admission, so there are no assigned seats. If, however, you have specific seating needs, please contact Joanna Hoch, Events Coordinator, at jhoch@fgcu.edu at least 72 hours prior to the performance to work on accomodations.
Can I pick my tickets up in advance? Unfortunately, no. Feel free to print the confirmation email as proof of purchase, but your name will be on a Will Call list at the Box Office one hour prior to the performance.
How early should I arrive prior to the performance? If you have not purchased tickets in advance, it is recommended that you arrive approximately 1/2 hour prior to the performance to ensure enough time to purchase the tickets and find seats.
Are food and drinks allowed in TheatreLab? Yes, but please note that there are only vending machines in the Arts Complex, so coffee, tea, and other specific snacks would need to be purchased prior to arrival.
Is there late seating? Unfortunately not. Due to the intimate nature of TheatreLab, in conjunction with lighting limitations, we are unable to seat patrons who arrive after the doors have closed. Late arrivals are more than welcome to wait until intermission, if there is one, so they can see the second part of the performance.
Something came up and I can no longer attend the performance. Can I get a refund? Unfortunately, we have a no exchange and no refund policy. Only our season subscribers have the ability to change performances. If you would like more information on becoming a subscriber, please contact Joanna Hoch, Events Coordinator, at jhoch@fgcu.edu.
