The FGCU Service-Learning Hurricane Ian Recovery Program is an initiative through
the Office of Service-Learning & Civic Engagement to provide as much volunteer assistance
to the community as possible following Hurricane Ian, which made landfall in SW Florida
on September 28, 2022.
Students may assist with hurricane recovery efforts in SW Florida and document the
hours toward their FGCU service-learning graduation requirement. Because students’ service in the community is helping the Office of Service-Learning
& Civic Engagement fulfill the objectives of its recovery program, students do not
need an additional community partner. With this program, the Office of Service-Learning & Civic Engagement is the required community partner of
record. As noted below, when documenting hours in Eagle Service Network for this program,
students will enter “FGCU Service-Learning Hurricane Ian Recovery Program” as the
registered 501c3 non-profit organization or government agency you are partnering with for service.
Experiences through this program must truly be in service to a person, organization, or animal(s).
The service must be helping someone other than oneself.
Someone must be able to verify the work (and time) you document in Eagle Service Network.
Students should track their time (time-in/time-out) and document each experience in
Eagle Service Network as soon as possible after each experience is complete. Students
should also keep a record of name and contact information for someone who can verify each experience. See the How to Document section below for further details.
Examples of recovery efforts that apply to this program include but are not limited
to the following:
Assisting neighbors, family, friends with hurricane recovery efforts
Debris removal
Gutting/cleaning damaged or flooded homes
Landscape repair
Document recovery/restoration
Note: When engaging in recovery efforts with another nonprofit or government agency
(a church, United Way, Habitat For Humanity, etc.) please list that agency as your
community partner in Eagle Service Network.
This program applies to recovery efforts from September 29, 2022, through March 1, 2023. After March 1, 2023, students will need to partner with a different nonprofit or
government agency to be able to document hurricane recovery efforts toward their service-learning
graduation requirement.
Service-learning hours from hurricane recovery efforts as part of this program must
be fully documented in FGCU’s Eagle Service Network as soon as possible, but no later
than September 1, 2023.
Students should continue to use the video guide here to document their hours in Eagle Service Network.
Remember that the system requires two steps:
Creating a form to get your partner approved
Tracking the number of hours when the experience is complete.
Expect 48 business hours before step 1 is approved by the Office of Service-Learning
& Civic Engagement. Students cannot complete step 2 until step 1 is approved. When following the video guide, students should use the details noted below.

Title of service-learning task being completed: (enter brief description of task - i.e. Helped clean up a flooded home)
Write a brief description of your experience including any special projects and tasks: (enter details of what exactly you did/plan to do - i.e. Assisted neighbors by removing flooded materials from homes including furniture, flooring,
rugs, bedding, etc. We also cleaned and disinfected the home.)
Start Date/End Date: (enter estimated dates of when service was/is taking place - exact dates will be entered
later)

Note: Once step 1 is submitted, you may need to wait up to 48 business hours for partner
