FGCU Orthopedic Residency Program

The residency program is designed build on the skills learned in the entry level doctor of Physical Therapy program. The program allows the novice physical therapists to advance their knowledge, clinical reasoning and handling skills to better meet the patient’s needs and to improve patient outcomes.

During this 11-month residency program the residents become very proficient in the clinical reasoning and clinical decision-making process within the evidence-based practice management model. The program is divided in both an academic and a clinical component. You will be working as a PT in one of the program’s affiliated sites under the supervision of a clinical mentor. Additionally, to this you will be academically active. You will have to complete 12 credit hours of course work divided over three semesters. Eligible applicants must have graduated from a CAPTE accredited Physical Therapy degree program), and hold a current physical therapy license in the US. This 11-month Residency program is designed to be a distant learning format, which is combined with three weeks on campus. 

Mission Statement

It is the mission of the Orthopedic Physical Therapy Residency Program at Florida Gulf Coast University to educate and train future orthopedic physical therapy specialists. The program is designed to promote clinical reasoning and decision making in orthopedics within a whole-body approach. The residents will develop excellence in orthopedic clinical practice by implementing evidence-based practice models. Graduates of the orthopedic residency program are mature, critical thinkers prepared to be leaders in orthopedic practice and able to adapt to the changing health care environment. The mission of the FGCU  Orthopedic Physical Therapy Residency Program supports the mission and goals of the University, the Marieb College of Health & Human Services, and the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences.

Residency Courses as Continuing Education Credit

The residency courses that take place on campus are eligible for continuing education credit in Florida. Continuing education credit will be the equivalent to the credit hours earned. Rule 64B17-9.001 (7a)
