Mentoring Resources

There are many mentoring programs at FGCU through which you can engage in mentoring. While most academic mentoring programs operate through special populations like the Honors College or Accelerated Collegiate Experience (ACE Program), others are offered through special interests like the Office of Undergraduate Scholarship's FGCUScholars Ambassadors or the PAGES Program for liberal arts and social sciences majors. 

 

Additional leadership-focused mentoring programs like Emerging Eagles MAPS are offered through the Multicultural & Leadership Development Center.

 The FGCU Alumni Association offers the Eagle Mentor Program in which FGCU students are connected to professionals in their field. As a mentor, you will make a difference in students’ lives by sharing life experiences and professional advice with your mentees. Mentors help mold and shape current students to become future professionals and leaders within the community.

Faculty are a great source of knowledge, experience, and insight for students. While there are currently no official faculty-student mentoring programs, students are encouraged to establish professional relationships with their faculty for guidance in research, internships, service-learning, and career exploration. 

 

The Lucas Center for Faculty Development offers a Student-Faculty Partnership Program (SFPP) in which one student and one faculty member engage in dialogue with each other for an entire semester. Through this partnership, Student Consultants analyze, affirm, and, as appropriate, support the revision of classroom practice in the context of one of the faculty partner's courses with the goal of maximizing engagement and learning. Overall, student and faculty partners work to develop a working alliance through dialogue in the interest of improving the course.

• Future-Oriented. Mentors understand the importance of considering the future big picture and consequences of a situation before taking action.
• Unlocking Self Potential. Mentors see the potential for you to be your best and want to help you get there. Mentors help you see this potential in yourself.
• Maximize Strengths. Mentors understand that we all have diverse strengths. The combination of strengths that you have will be put to use differently to most effectively accomplish your goal.
• Supportive Relationship. Mentors will be in support of your positive, healthy goals and help you determine the best plans of action by guiding, not telling.
• Overcoming Internal Obstacles. Mentors offer an external perspective to help you practice self-awareness and understand what obstacles you will present to yourself during a change.

The Lucas Center for Faculty Development offers a variety of programs that connect faculty members across campus. These include Faculty Learning Communities, Lucas Center Symposia, New Faculty Academy, Mentor Coach Program, Peer Observation of Teaching, and a series of workshops for faculty of all levels.

FGCU’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee is establishing a mentoring program for faculty and staff in an effort to foster collaborative relationships across campus and help build community within FGCU. The goals of the program include:

• Fostering personal and professional networks within and across academic disciplines and administrative departments
• Providing personalized information and resources that promote professional growth and development
• Encouraging a sense of community and greater involvement with the FGCU community.
