About Us

The best value in high-quality engineering education

FGCU's School of Engineering was established in fall 2005 and became the U.A. Whitaker College of Engineering (WCE) in August 2011.

The WCE is located in Holmes Hall, a building that was specifically designed for student-centered teaching of engineering and computing courses in an active and collaborative learning environment. The college has 30 faculty and staff and over 976 students. We offer undergraduate degree programs in bioengineering, civil engineering, environmental engineering and software engineering (as well as an undergraduate degree in computer science for students who were on campus before fall 2011).

MISSION

To produce engineering and construction leaders in selected disciplines with strong technical competence and professional skills to meet the challenges of Southwest Florida and beyond.

VISION

To provide the best value in high-quality engineering and construction education.

We are competitive

Throughout the year, FGCU engineering students team up to put classroom learning and project management skills into action in competitive events locally and across the country.

Concrete Canoe

The ASCE National Concrete Canoe Competition (NCCC) provides students with a practical application of the engineering principles they learn in the classroom, along with important team and project management skills they will need in their careers. The event challenges the students' knowledge, creativity and stamina, while showcasing the versatility and durability of concrete as a building material. FGCU competes annually in the South East Region against universities such as University of Florida, University of Alabama and University of Tennessee.

Steel Bridge

The ASCE/AISC steel bridge competition is a student contest that tests the knowledge and practicality of teams of university students from American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Student Chapters in the field of structural engineering. FGCU competes annually in the South East Region against universities such as University of Florida, University of Alabama and University of Tennessee.

Cardboard Regatta

Each year, students from the college participate in the Cardboard Regatta, where they test their ship-building (and navigation) skills against teams from the local community. Students design, plan, test and build their cardboard creations. This event allows students to be creative, have fun and apply engineering principles that they will use in real-world applications.
