Harvell, Shane
Shane Harvell began his first full year with FGCU Athletic in 2022-23 after being hired as Assistant Director of Athletic Communications in April of 2022. Harvell will be the primary contact for FGCU volleyball, softball, men's golf, women's golf and swimming & diving, and is FGCU's secondary contact for men's basketball.
Harvell graduated from Appalachian State University in May of 2021 with a degree in communication, journalism and a minor in media studies.
During his four-year, strategic communications assistant stint at App State, Harvell served as the primary contact for baseball, field hockey, men and women’s golf, men and women’s track and field and men and women’s cross country. In total, Harvell was the primary contact for eight different athletic programs at App State.
Harvell also managed App State Athletics’ social media platforms. App State Athletics’ social placed top 40 in total interactions generated among all DI institutions, according to SkullSparks.
His main duties included working with the media, maintaining stats and record archives, elevating the App State brand across social media and covering student-athlete success on and off the field. Also, he spearheaded the graphic design efforts for both the App State men and women’s golf programs.
Harvell also helped cover and fulfill the sports information needs, including stats input, for a variety of Mountaineer championship sports spanning from football to men and women’s basketball. He too has been a spotter for ESPN, hosted a Sun Belt emoji golf tournament and covered App State’s first men’s golfer to compete in a NCAA Championship event.
His celebratory videos of App State football student-athletes defeating the University of South Carolina received over 44,000 views on Twitter. A multimedia feature piece that Harvell produced for one of the App State women’s golfers received over 15,000 views and interactions.
During the summer of 2019-21, Harvell was the media relations director for the High Point-Thomasville HiToms, a summer collegiate baseball organization in the Coastal Plain League. There, he was the primary contact for a total of five affiliate teams as HPT was the first sports organization in the area to safely bring sports back in the age of COVID-19.
