CV/Resume

I am Md Shohel Rana and am an analytical thinker with problem-solving and leadership skills and have a Ph.D. degree in Computational Science (Major. in Computer Science). Also, I am experienced in data science and have a solid background in mathematics and statistical model development. My research areas are in Data Science, data mining, artificial intelligence (i.e., machine learning, deep learning), machine vision, computer vision, e-learning, and applied cybersecurity. I am bringing hands-on experience in using advanced statistical techniques and modern machine learning methods. My primary research is to perform analysis and detect several cybersecurity threats. I also have performed analysis on multimedia forensics and various detection and prevention techniques on how to detect and prevent them using artificial intelligence algorithms.

Despite having capability in research, I prefer to focus on teaching in the present stage of my career and I am passionate about continuing my teaching along with research. I have a great deal of teaching experience before coming to the U.S. as well as working as a software engineer for several tech companies in Bangladesh. After five years of working in industries, I realized that it is valuable to bring the industry into the classroom by translating classroom learning to real-world applications. As an industry person, I can add my expertise and skills to the classroom through the transition in my professional life, enrich my students learning experience, and prepare them for further training and education. Besides, I can share with students insight into the industry and teach about potential challenges and solutions to those challenges so that they can cope with these challenges. I switched to academia and took the privilege to teach students by utilizing my experiences and pieces of knowledge gained from various industries and academic studies.

My views on teaching have been fashioned by being a part of various institutes. As a student at Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University (MBSTU), Bangladesh, I experienced the benefits of a liberal arts setting. As a faculty member at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Alabama and Northern Kentucky University (NKU), United States, and Daffodil International University (DIU), Bangladesh, I had an opportunity to share my industries’ real-life experiences with my students and teach them how to cope with an unfamiliar environment. Currently, as an assistant professor at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU), one of my primary responsibilities is to teach undergraduate students.

As a part of my research and/or teaching services, I explore ways to develop useful learning tools and curricula and use the outcomes of these studies to focus on developing my teaching technique. In addition to trying new teaching approaches in my classes, I am incredibly interested in innovating new ideas and developing new tools based on these ideas.

The teaching experience that I gained at USM, NKU and UAB taught me the challenges and opportunities of managing a multicultural classroom. From these institutions, I have learned how to create space for minority students. Also, I have learned how to create and ensure a diverse and inclusive learning environment for providing equal access to students with disabilities. As a faculty member, I always try to serve as a mentor and advisor and inspire students from different ethnic groups and cultural backgrounds, helping them work and grow, and encouraging them professionally to be empathic to one another.

More importantly, I would more happy to make every effort to help my beloved students become active and independent learners in their lifelong learning process.
