Matt Metcalf grew up in Birmingham, Alabama and received his bachelor's degree in Zoology from Auburn University in 2010. After working a few internships, he moved to Fort Myers, Florida to attend FGCU for his master's in Environmental Science. His thesis work focused on conservation efforts for the federally protected Eastern Indigo Snake.

Matt's research is broadly centered on herpetofauna but particularly focused on native snakes and spatial ecology. He is interested in an array of ecological topics including exotic and invasive species, urban ecology, parasitology, and tropical biology. Most recently, he is conducting radio telemetry on Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnakes in SWFL, as well as assessing amphibian and reptile communities in the Peruvian Amazon.
