Artist Talk in U. Tobe Recital Hall: Saturday January 14, 10:30 – 11:30am Opening Reception with the Artist: Saturday January 14, 11:30am-12:30pm For Carmelo Blandino, art exists as a conduit to confront humanity’s uncertainty. Incapsulating the beauty of nature and historical painting in the context of experimental contemporary street styles, the artist, Carmelo Blandino examines universal truths experienced through his personal journey of healing and “rebirth” through decades of his painting practice. The paintings in this empowering exhibition range from large-scale explorations of abstracted florals and notions of Nature’s heroism, to playfully concealed iconography in an attempt to strengthen and empower the motivation away from the mundane of the everyday, in an effort to thwart the dark fringe of human uncertainty. Blandino is a creative superpower, his weapon a brush… through his paintings, a metaphor of the joys of life are accessed, catapulting the viewer beyond the limitations of constructed reality into an exciting and invigorating world where good prevails! Sponsored by Alice and Dean Fjelstul; The Layden Family Foundation; The Smith Family Foundation of Estero; Method & Concept; WGCU Public Media; and the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture More information can be found at https://www.fgcu.edu/artgalleries/currentseason/#CurrentShow |

Everything is Nothing AMLgMATD | /cas/bsma/images/everythingisnothing.jpg | 17 | 01 | 2023 | 10:00am | 4 | 11 | Arts Complex Courtyard, FGCU Campus |
January 14, 2023 – December 15, 2023 Everything is Nothing explores the experience of traveling through a lifetime of imagery, absorbing the visual information we encounter along the way, and reconstructing the fragments of and into our collective memory. Consisting of hundreds of feet of material stretched over the Arts Complex courtyard, the overhead installation results in a visual mix of imagery cut from billboards and banners, colors and textures from lawn webbing and pennants, all woven together producing a cacophony of visual noise. As a functioning canopy, Everything is Nothing protects visitors from the sun under its vibrating shadow. AMLgMATD, a Miami-based collaborative studio established by Laz Ojalde and Natalie Zlamalova in 2014, experiments in works of art, design objects and environmental installations that reflect their love of unusual and overlooked materials. AMLgMATD’s modus operandi consists of incorporating historical and geographical research into their visual language, playing with the sense of nostalgia, the application of familiar materials onto new forms and unexplored materials into familiar settings while redefining their surroundings. AMLgMATD’s works are collected by private and corporate clients in Miami, New York, and Los Angeles, and their WEBSTR stools are available throughout the US in both boutique and museum stores. Sponsored by Gene and Lee Seidler and the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture Image: AMLgMATD, Proposal for Everything is Nothing, 2023 Site specific installation in the FGCU Arts Complex courtyard, Mixed media |

Thursday, February 23, 2023 6:00pm Light reception to follow in the Arts Complex Lobby At the heart of the Material Memories project is the question of what role photography plays in remembering history, both personal and public. What are the moments of our collective history that we keep, and which parts do we forget? What role do institutional archives play in the construction of collective memory? A single black and white photograph, found at the Museum of Yugoslavia in Belgrade, provoked a discovery into post WWII history of socialist Yugoslavia. With a series of photographs and photographic installations I present a psychological portrait of the era of the cold war, burdened with photographic representations of socialist propaganda. I turn my camera to the archives and years of accumulation of historical materials. Material Memories is dependent on the unfolding of memory and history, and their inevitable opposition. Like the image itself, the history appears fragile and slightly distorted. Photographs remind us that memory is a constructed phenomenon.
