This I believe: 6 Tenets of Leadership

Over a lengthy career in higher education and through a number of roles at several institutions, I’ve come to believe six basic tenets that have framed my approach to university leadership.

  • Excellence is a journey  — not a destination

  • Universities are themselves an ongoing experiment

  • Faculty, administrators, staff, facilities, funding, all resources are a means to an end, they are not the end

  • Embracing diversity in all its forms is fundamental in the journey toward excellence

  • Public universities should be “public” in every way

  • Every job worth doing should be interesting, rewarding and fun
